Program Highlights

  • A Very Private Eye: Austen's Emma as a Novel of Detection
Move over Sam Spade. Emma is on the case! Stephanie Barron, author of the popular Jane Austen Mystery series, examined Emma from the viewpoint of a mystery plot - with Emma as a rather lousy detective. (Unlike Barron's Jane!)

  • Not Just Another Pretty Face: Why We Love Jane Austen
In this highly entertaining presentation (which has received rave reviews from JASNA regions across the country), Joan Klingel Ray, president of the Jane Austen Society of North America, explored Austen's place in literature and culture today.

  • Uncorseting Austen: Passion and Narrative Structure in the Novels
Contrary to common opinion, Austen's novels boil over with passion. To prove it, Kathleen Anderson, assistant professor of English at Palm Beach Atlantic College in Florida, followed Austen's eligible, likeable women as they travel along the socio-sexual grid on their journeys of discovery.

  • Scenes from Sense and Sensibility
Members of the Actors' Renaissance Theatre performed selected scenes from an original stage adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, written and directed by Ashley Barnard. Afterward, we had the opportunity to ask about the challenges and rewards of adapting Austen's work for the stage.
